Everyone is busy. Just ask someone ‘how are you’? The daily grind is always lurking. The need for a work-life balance is huge. You’re fully focused on your tasks. So how do you connect with your colleagues? Break the patterns! We believe in moments of happiness. In creating serotonin. Create it. Force it. But make sure those moments are there or will come.

how a water fight leads to greater social cohesion

We had a water fight. It created social cohesion. A better bond with colleagues, and with the neighbors.

We had a water fight. It created social cohesion. A better bond with colleagues. And with the neighbors.

How it all started:

Wednesday: Take the following ingredients;

  • a warm day
  • deadlines
  • launch of a new label
  • process changes
  • new colleagues
  • a strong work ethic

Mix them together. Sprinkle some ad hoc grains on top. Add a secret ingredient: a stack of water pistols filled with water, and make sure to get the whole office outside. Create a water battle. End result: refreshment, relaxation, and team unity.

From this idea, we thought that an internal water fight we held (which attracted a lot of attention on the business park) could also be lucrative on the business park. We know our ‘neighbor colleagues’ from a wave and a friendly smile, but it often stops there, because… you know; it’s always busy..

Fostering camaraderie

Thursday morning: The day after this spontaneous Wednesday afternoon event, it was clear to us: we are going to invite our business park neighbors and share the feeling we created internally with others! A last-minute promo team set out to get the neighbors excited. The only rules: ‘be there at 12 and everyone buys their own water guns’. To avoid randomly storing an entire toy store in our sheds after the day, we decided to donate the purchased items to a charity for children, hoping they would have just as much fun with these items as we did.

Thursday afternoon: The idea was so well received and companies came up with their own internal calls and ideas, that our enthusiasm grew even more! The action plan was made, roles were divided, and the necessary items were prepared. Maybe, just maybe, the press was tipped off 😉.

Friday morning: After an internal briefing and setting up the props and filling all the water supplies, we were ready! By sharing footage from Wednesday and keeping the enthusiasm high, the reactions were already phenomenally positive.

Friday lunchtime: 12:00 PM. The square filled up with neighborhood colleagues.
Laughter echoed across the courtyard as people enthusiastically aimed their water guns. Friendly taunts and playful jokes replaced the usual car sounds at the workplace. There were cars, of course, but these belonged to the battle. Suddenly, we were not just neighborhood colleagues; we were a real team united by a common goal – to soak each other!

Encouraging collaboration and breaking down hierarchies

Water fights are not about individual glory; they are about teamwork. One of the most remarkable aspects was how it dissolved hierarchical boundaries. In the heat of battle, titles, positions, and the fact that you came from a different office were quickly forgotten. Mixed teams were created. There was no distinction; activities like these turn out to be the great equalizer. It was a stark reminder that when people work together towards a shared goal, they can achieve remarkable results; in this case, soaking each other and forgetting about work stress for a while. And what about that mountain of water guns everyone donated; a great outcome!

Creating lasting memories

Our water fight became an unforgettable memory etched in the minds of everyone who participated. A relatively small effort now leads to a wave to the neighbors with a cheerful greeting and the question of when we’ll do something together again, or what the other person actually does in that big office, and whether we can mean something for each other.

By the way, it also provided a media boost for all the companies that participated and for the business park itself. And internally… internally we’re still working hard, but we also know that management values relaxation and togetherness highly.

Conclusion

In the fast-paced world of business, where deadlines and deliverables often take priority, it is essential to find ways to build meaningful connections with one another. Our spontaneous water fight on the company premises was a testament to the power of simple, unscripted moments to create social cohesion. It reminded us that beneath the professional veneer, we are all people longing for connection and camaraderie.

So, the next time you find yourself stuck in the demands of your work, consider organizing a water fight or a similar unconventional team-building activity. You’ll be surprised by the bonds you can forge and the cohesion you can create. After all, sometimes a little bit of water can go a long way in bringing people closer together.
